One of the things that most intrigues the women I talk to when they’re trying for a baby is that almost invisible moment when everything begins: implantation. When exactly does it happen? Can you feel it? How long do you have to wait before a test turns positive? What is embryo implantation?

After the sperm fertilises the egg in the fallopian tube, the fertilised egg (now an embryo) starts dividing as it travels towards the uterus. Implantation is the moment when that tiny embryo attaches to the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus that has prepared during the cycle to receive it.

Here’s the key many of you don’t know: implantation isn’t a single instant, but a process that takes several days. And it’s a crucial step, because the moment the embryo implants, the production of the hormone hCG (the one pregnancy tests detect) begins. Without implantation in the uterus, there’s no pregnancy as such.

When does implantation happen?

Implantation depends directly on ovulation. In a regular 28-day cycle:

Ovulation usually happens around day 14.
The embryo implants between 6 and 12 days after ovulation.
On average we talk about 9 days after ovulation, which is around day 23 of the cycle.

Careful with the maths: because pregnancy is counted from the first day of your last period (not from conception), implantation usually falls between weeks 3 and 4 of pregnancy. Every woman and every cycle is different, so these figures are only a guide and can vary by a few days.

Timeline: from ovulation to implantation

So you can see it clearly, here’s the full journey:

The day of ovulation: the egg is released from the ovary.
0-1 day later: the sperm fertilises the egg (which only lives 12 to 24 hours).
2-4 days later: the embryo, already dividing, travels along the tube.
4-5 days later: it reaches the uterus as a blastocyst.
6-12 days later: it implants in the endometrium (average: 9 days).
4-5 days after implantation: hCG starts showing up in urine with a sensitive test.

Can you feel implantation? Symptoms

This is a very common question and I’ll be honest with you: many women feel absolutely nothing, and that’s totally normal. Others report some mild signs around the implantation window:

Spotting (implantation bleeding): a few pink or brownish drops that don’t last, different from your period.
Mild cramps: faint discomfort in the lower abdomen.
Tiredness or tender breasts: due to the early hormonal shift.

But take note: these symptoms are not proof of pregnancy, because they can also appear in a normal luteal phase without implantation. If you notice anything, wait and confirm with a test; don’t worry either way. If you have strong pain or heavy bleeding, always speak to your doctor.

When can a pregnancy test turn positive?

hCG production starts right at implantation and roughly doubles every 48 hours. That’s why:

A sensitive urine test (detecting around 25 mIU/ml) usually turns positive from the first day of your missed period, around weeks 4-5 of pregnancy.
An early detection test (10 mIU/ml) can be a few days sooner, but with a higher risk of a false negative if you take it too early.
Always use your first morning urine, which is the most concentrated.

My advice is to wait until the first day of your missed period to test and, if it’s negative but you still have symptoms or a delay, repeat it 2 or 3 days later. What to do if you suspect you’re pregnant

If you’re in your implantation window or think it may have happened:

Wait until your expected period day to take a urine test with first morning urine.
If you want a clearer, earlier answer, ask for a beta-hCG blood test: it’s more sensitive and measures the level.
If the test is positive, book an appointment with your doctor or gynaecologist for confirmation (often with an ultrasound) and follow-up.
If you don’t already, start taking folic acid and look after your diet and rest.

And here’s something almost nobody tells you: if a test looks positive and then fades or your period arrives, it may have been a biochemical pregnancy; it’s not your fault and it doesn’t usually affect future fertility.
