Pregnancy Week 2: Ovulation and Your Fertile Days

Pregnancy week 2 is a quiet but decisive week: it’s when ovulation happens and, with it, your fertile window opens. If you’re trying to get pregnant, this is the week with the best odds. Let me tell you how to make the most of it and what exactly happens in your body ❤️.

⚠️ Already got a positive test? Then you’re not in week 2. With a missed period or a positive result, you’re usually in week 4 or beyond. Find your week or go to pregnancy week 4.

Egg released during ovulation

What happens in pregnancy week 2?

Since the week is counted from your last period, in week 2 there’s still no pregnancy: your body is getting ready for ovulation. Around day 14 of a 28-day cycle, the ovary releases a mature egg and that’s when your fertile window opens.

The egg only survives for 12 to 24 hours after ovulation, but sperm can live for up to 5 days inside the female body. That’s why your fertile days span roughly the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself.

How do I know when I’m ovulating?

There are several signs you can watch for:

For more detail, I explain everything in my article about fertile days, with tricks to work out your exact window.

Can I take a pregnancy test in week 2?

No, not yet. In week 2 there’s no fertilised egg and no hCG hormone, so any test (urine or blood) would be negative. Home tests only become reliable from the first day of your missed period, which I cover in week 4.

Tips for week 2

Frequently asked questions

Which day of my cycle do I ovulate in week 2?

In a regular 28-day cycle, ovulation usually happens around day 14, which falls in pregnancy week 2. With longer or shorter cycles, the date shifts.

How many fertile days do I have?

Around 6: the 5 days before ovulation plus the day itself. The egg barely lives 24 hours, so the ideal is to have sex on those preceding days.

Is it normal not to ovulate exactly on day 14?

Yes, totally. Every woman has her own rhythm, and day 14 is just an average. That’s why it’s better to watch the signs (mucus, temperature) rather than only the calendar.

Can a test be positive in week 2?

No. Without implantation there’s no hCG, so any test would be negative. It’s normal to wait for the missed period (start of week 5) for the first reliable test.

If you want to keep following along, in week 3 I explain fertilisation and implantation, and in week 4 comes the time of the first symptoms and the test. Remember this content is for information only: if you have any doubts, consult your doctor ❤️.
